🔥 From fire to prevention: the MADmax Observatory is coming to Karatasios
In the early hours of Thursday, July 23, a fire broke out at the former Karatasios military camp in Polichni, Thessaloniki, burning approximately two acres of low vegetation and some trees. The rapid response of the Fire Service brought the fire under control, and no homes were threatened.
For us at ESAI EN ROI, this event became the reason to move from reflection to action. We decided to create the MADmax Observatory at Karatasios.
The name is not accidental. The Observatory is being developed alongside our MADmax – Make Art From Discards campaign, which focuses on reusing discarded materials and transforming them into creative and artistic resources.
We want to connect these two ideas: reuse, observation, care and prevention.
The Observatory will help us identify and document potential risks and problems in the area, such as:
dry grass and accumulated vegetation,
waste and illegal dumping,
abandoned or potentially flammable materials,
damage and areas requiring attention.
Because prevention does not begin when the fire starts. It begins when we notice a risk and choose not to ignore it.
We can all contribute: don't leave waste behind, don't throw away cigarette butts, don't light fires, don't leave flammable materials in vegetation. And when we spot something that could create a risk, document it and report it to the appropriate authorities.
We don't want to remember Karatasios only when it burns.
We want to observe it, care for it, protect it — and create together.
MADmax – Make Art From Discards.

From discarded materials to creativity. From observation to prevention.
