Redevelopment of a part of Karatassiou Park: A Gazebo to Enhance Nature and Community

The first time I took a walk in Karatassiou Park, an extraordinary green area located on the outskirts of the city of Thessaloniki, I discovered a place that struck me deeply. During the walk, I came across a clearing that seemed hidden, a small enchanted corner surrounded by nature. In the center of this clearing was a stone-paved clearing, pentagonal in shape, surrounded by majestic pine trees that seemed to protect the place with their shade and grandeur.

That portion of the park, despite being evidently neglected and underexploited, conveyed a special charm, a feeling of calm and unexpressed potential. I paused for a long time to observe the place and imagined how it could be transformed into something even more welcoming and functional for visitors. My mind immediately began to envision a new configuration of the space: a central gazebo that could serve as the beating heart of this clearing.

The opportunity to turn this vision into reality came thanks to the Erasmus+ project, which will allow us to work together with 11 volunteers from different countries in Europe. This project represents not only a park redevelopment initiative, but also an extraordinary opportunity for cultural exchange and mutual learning. Together, we will work on building the gazebo and upgrading the path leading to the central clearing, making this part of the park more accessible and attractive to all.

The design of the gazebo has already started a few weeks ago, in collaboration between me and architect Giuseppe Guerra from Rome. The gazebo will be made of sustainable materials and will incorporate elements that respect the surrounding environment, while enhancing the functionality and aesthetics of the space.

The days dedicated to construction will be Dec. 19, 20 and 21, during which the group of volunteers, led by experts and with the support of architect Guerra, will work intensively to shape the project. The construction will be designed as a real workshop, where participants will be able to learn new technical skills and share creative ideas.

At the end of the activity, an official inauguration of the clearing and gazebo is planned, a time of collective celebration to appreciate the work done and share the results of this initiative with the local community. The main objective is to give Karatassiou Park back a regenerated and welcoming corner that can become a place for all those who frequent it to meet, relax and socialize.

This project represents not only a physical redevelopment, but also an act of care and attention towards a common space, which can be transformed from forgotten into a symbol of collaboration, creativity and rebirth.
